#WomanCrushWednesday: The darling Tiwa Savage

Tiwatope Savage-Balogun, commonly known by her stage name Tiwa Savage, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, performer and actress who currently has a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Savage signed a recording contract with Mavin Records in 2012 and eventually went on to sign a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation in June 2016.

Tiwa co-wrote the track “Collard Greens & Cornbread” off Fantasia Barrino’s Grammy-nominated album, Back to Me and was featured on Solar Plexus, a compilation album released by Mavin Records. Her debut studio album, Once Upon a Time, was released on 3 July 2013. It was supported by the singles “Kele Kele Love”, “Love Me (3x)”, “Without My Heart”, “Ife Wa Gbona”, “Folarin”, “Olorun Mi” and “Eminado”. 

Savage’s second studio album, R.E.D, was released on 19 December 2015. It produced the singles “My Darlin'”, “African Waist” and “If I Start To Talk”. Savage sings in English and Yoruba. As a singer, her achievements include one MTV Africa Music Award, two The Headies Awards, one Channel O Music Video Award, one Nigeria Music Video Award, and two City People Entertainment Awards, among others.

Tiwa has been musically active since 1996 but Most of her early years were spent making waves outside the Nigerian scene so when she stepped onto Nigeria’s musical landscape, she didn’t know what to expect. She initially received a lot of ridicule and hostility from people who believed she wouldn’t make it. She said that numerous people tried to discourage her from settling in Nigeria. Moreover, people told her that she wouldn’t be welcome as a female singer and wouldn’t be able to share the same stage with the likes of Tuface and Wizkid.

Savage didn’t allow people’s negative connotation of her discourage her from doing music. She released her debut single “Kele Kele Love” and the song made its way to the top of several Nigerian music charts. From then on, she became Nigeria’s sweetheart.
In spite of the scandals she has had to face in the past with reagards to her marriage and relationship with fellow artistes, Tiwa has rise above water and has spurred on. She series as a source of motivation to budding artistes and a rose model to many young women.
