So, the Internet has been buzzing for the past 24 hours over what popular comical Singer/Rapper, Falz had to say about Nigerian artists and how the content of their lyrics promote internet fraud (yahoo yahoo) and other dubious means of making money.

A lot of folks have had a lot to say about this. While some commend Falz for “talking sense”, others condemn him and are calling him out for “subbing 9ice and Lord of Ajasa”.

It is true that both 9ice and Lord of Ajass in recent times have sang about making money via fraud and shouting out to their friends who do such but I am appalled that Nigerians have become so morally degraded that we call out an individual who Is obviously just trying to point out a current trend that will definitely have an adverse effect on the future of young ones and even the future of the music industry. This trend did not start today; from the days of “Yahoozee” to “Maga don Pay” to the “YBNL” label, artistes have always pointed the life of Crime and flamboyant living as acceptable and even commendable.

Sometime last year, there was a video going round where a little boy clearly stated that he wants to be a ‘Yahoo Boy’ when he grows up. Now lets ask ourselves what sort of orientation the boy has which must have  put such a thought into his head. Apart from our peers, Entertainment (movies,  music and books) are a huge influence on the young minds and even that of adults.

From all indications, Falz was just trying to remind artistes about the need to entertain and impart positively to their listeners instead of promoting crime, dubious lifestyles and laziness.

It is just sad and disheartening to see Nigerians come out to attack him for what he said. Even if he did call out 9ice and Lord of Ajasa, which he didn’t (or did he mention any names?)  the wise thing to do would be to pick the lesson from his statement and leave the rest. However, people in their usual way, chose to kill the messenger because well, truth is bitter.

This just goes to show how our moral compass is so broken that we now justify crime as a fancy pop lifestyle.
